Description:

East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, ca. 1603 to 1868 CE. A fine gathering of five cast-bronze and cast-copper menuki meant to adorn a traditional Japanese sword beneath the wrappings of the sword handle. The menuki depict a copper pair of running samurai warriors; a brass crouching, cane-wielding warrior with a sloth-like face; a bronze crouching fisherman holding a large fish; a copper striding demon warrior holding a large sack; and a bronze merchant standing next to two barrels and holding a small satchel. The intricate details of each copper and bronze menuki are accentuated with applied 98% gilding, and fine patina has developed across the obverse surfaces. Size of largest (sloth warrior): 1.125" L x 0.9" W (2.9 cm x 2.3 cm); quality of gilding: 98%.
