Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A fabulous ensemble of five hand-carved miniature amulets, three formed from emerald-green jade, and two from mottled green stone with beige inclusions. The jade pieces depict a columnar body with abstract Janiform faces; a partial figure with a conical lower body and bulging eyes; and a petite maskette with a triangular nose and a rounded brow. One greenstone amulet presents as a disembodied head with highly-stylized facial features, and the other as a squat yet fully-formed figure with attenuated legs and a tall head. Each amulet is biconically drilled for suspension. Size of largest (jade maskette): 0.45" W x 0.75" H (1.1 cm x 1.9 cm).
