Description:

Egypt, Middle to New Kingdom, ca. 2050 to 1069 BCE. A group of six earthtone scarabs, carved from a soft stone known as steatite, etched with hieroglyphic inscriptions, and drilled lengthwise through each body. One scarab displays the cartouche of the New Kingdom pharaoh Thutmose III, and another with two cobras flanking a scarab represents Djed which is associated with the god Osiris. Two additional scarabs have hieroglyphs pertaining to protection, good health, and good fortune. One scarab features a seated man above the image of an owl, which represents wisdom and intellect. The last scarab has a purely-aesthetic floral design. Size of largest: 0.825" L (2.1 cm).
