Description:

Central Asia, Pakistan/Afghanistan/Northwestern India, Gandhara region, Kushan Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A carved schist figure of the standing Buddha, depicted in the classic Gandharan style that blends Greco-Roman naturalism with early Buddhist iconography. Draped in a voluminous monastic robe with cascading folds, the Buddha stands with a serene expression, his left hand lowered, while the now-missing right hand was likely raised in the abhaya mudra, the gesture symbolizing reassurance and the dispelling of fear. Behind his head is a circular nimbus, and he stands atop a base decorated with a pair of rosettes in low relief. This figure embodies the synthesis of East and West that defined Gandharan art, likely once part of a larger architectural or devotional ensemble. A superb example of Kushan-era craftsmanship in hard, dark gray schist, typical of sacred Gandharan statuary. Size: 4.75" W x 14.5" H (12.1 cm x 36.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-Jasper collection, Illinois, USA; ex-Dennis Herr collection; ex-Leland Mast collection
