Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi Province, Bahia culture, ca. 5th to 1st century BCE. A ceramic depiction of an abstract individual, almost extraterrestrial in appearance, with large, almond-shaped eyes, a projecting nose, and an enormous head; skull-shaping in infants was a common practice in ancient South America, and this individual may represent an idealized form of beauty. The back of the head features a small mouth hole, and two small tones holes flank either side of the back. Embellished with incised linear and curvilinear, this is a fabulous example from ancient Ecuador! Size: 5.5" H (14 cm).
