Description:

Egyptian, Middle Kingdom, XII Dynasty to early XIII Dynasty, ca. 1938 to 1700 BCE. A miniature kohl jar, finely carved from pale blue marble (anhydrite), presenting an inverted piriform body with a protruding flat base, a short neck leading to a dramatically flaring rim, and a deep cylindrical receptacle. Its distinct shape and size - designed to fit into the palm of one's hand - has an opening that is just wide enough to fit a finger or kohl applicator. Ancient Egyptian artisans were consistent with this shape and its balanced proportions, but used different materials to create a variety of vessels. This vessel, made from a fine blue marble with subtle slate blue and lavendar hues, must have been regarded as quite a treasure. Size: 1.875" in diameter x 1.625" H (4.8 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Dr. Sid Port collection, California, USA, acquired in the 1980s
