Pre-Columbian, south coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 400 CE. A multi-strand necklace - six strands to be exact - comprised of hundreds of cut spondylus shell beads of beautiful coral pink, seafoam green, sunny orange, and creamy beige hues - restrung and joined via a modern gold hook (16 kt) and loop (14 kt) clasp. Spondylus shells, also known as spiny or thorny oysters due to their nubby appearance, have been revered by Andean peoples since the Pre-Columbian era. In addition to being featured in their artwork and used as currency, Spondylus pieces served as sacred offerings to Pachamama, the earth/time mother, a version of Mother Nature.
