Description:

Democratic Republic of Congo, 20th century CE. This is a cylindrically carved, double-headed wooden statue of a woman with a large headdress. She has applied leather, twine, and fetish material wrapped around her body. The Luba and Hemba peoples live very close together and have very similar styles of artistic expression; both are known for iconographic representations of women. This corresponds to the importance of women in their society. It is believed that figures such as these are based on veneration of the ancestors, and this may be based on the likeness of an actual woman. Size: 16-1/2" H x 4-3/4" W x 4-3/4" L (42 cm x 12 cm x 12 cm).
