Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luba peoples, 20th century CE. A carved, smooth, dark wood Janus figure, with two figures, one female, and one male, standing back to back; their faces have unique details, but their hats and postures mimic one another. The Janus figure form with male and female tells an instant story to the knowledgable viewer: they can create together magical beings and their male/female dual persona will have power with fertility and protection. Figures like these often had receptacles for fetish materials carved somewhere on the body - perhaps at the feet? Size: 4.1" W x 11.75" H (10.4 cm x 29.8 cm)
