Description:

Ancient Near East, ca. 1st millennium BCE. A solid cast bronze standing goat, Luristan, western Iran, Iron Age, circa 1000–650 BCE. The figure is depicted with elegantly curved horns, characteristically floppy ears, and a long neck incised with a V-shaped mane continuing down the spine. The confident, economical casting captures the essential character of the animal with the expressive shorthand typical of the finest Luristan animal bronzes.

The wild goat (capra aegagrus) was among the most symbolically charged animals in ancient Iranian art and religion, appearing across media from cylinder seals to monumental relief as an emblem of the natural world, divine abundance, and the mountain landscape of the Zagros. Luristan bronze goats of this type were deposited as votive offerings at open-air sanctuaries and in warrior burials alongside weapons, horse trappings, and other prestige objects. A very fine and characteristic example of the tradition. Size: 2”H x 2.5”L (5.1 x 6.3cm).

Provenance: NJ. collection. Ex. private NYC. collection, acquired from Henry Anavian, Sumer Gallery, NYC., 1980’s.
