Lot 83A
Ancient Near East, Luristan, ca. 9th to 7th century BCE. A Luristan bronze standard of two-piece construction, presenting the classic "Master of Animals" motif. The finial depicts a central standing figure with upraised arms grasping the necks of two confronting beasts, their elongated heads curving inward in mirrored symmetry. Below, an openwork section displays interlacing serpentine forms, enhancing the sense of divine power and cosmic order. The staff, cast to resemble bamboo-like segments, would have originally been mounted for ritual display. The "Master of Animals" theme, among the most enduring of Near Eastern iconographies, represents humankind's mediation between the natural and supernatural realms, symbolizing authority, balance, and protection. Luristan bronzes such as this were employed in ceremonial contexts, likely serving as standards or finials for sacred poles within shrines or temples. Size: 2.7" W x 11.7" H (6.9 cm x 29.7 cm); 11.9" H (30.2 cm) on included custom stand.
The rich green and red patination, along with mineral deposits, attest to its long burial and ancient origin. A fine example of Luristan bronze artistry, merging technical mastery with potent symbolism, and preserving its two-part assembly in remarkable condition.
