Description:

Ancient Near East, ca. 1st millennium BCE. Cast solid bronze male mouflon (wild sheep), standing on four long legs, and having a suspension loop on his back. Depicted with curled horns and a rope collar, tied in the front. A set of raised decorative circular elements at the top of each leg.

The mouflon — the wild sheep of the Zagros and Alborz mountains — was a significant animal in the symbolic repertoire of ancient Iran, associated with the mountain landscape, the hunt, and divine favor. The presence of both a rope collar and a suspension loop on this figure is particularly notable: the collar suggests a tamed or sacrificial animal, while the loop confirms its function as a carried object of personal significance. A fine and unusually detailed example of Luristan animal bronze casting. Size: 1.88”H x 2.25”L (4.8 x 5.7cm).

Provenance: NJ. collection. Ex. private NYC. collection, acquired from Henry Anavian, Sumer Gallery, NYC., 1980’s.
