Ancient Near East, Bronze Age, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A finely cast copper alloy axe head, socketed for hafting, with a broad crescentic blade and a reinforced butt designed for attachment to a wooden shaft. The casting is accomplished with skill, the socket slightly flaring and strengthened by a prominent ridge above the blade. The surface is enveloped in a rich green patina, mottled with areas of earthen accretions, lending a vivid testament to its long burial in the Iranian soil. Axes of this type served both utilitarian and martial functions, used in daily tasks as well as in warfare, and they also held symbolic value as emblems of authority. The Luristan region, situated in the Zagros Mountains of western Iran, is renowned for producing bronze and copper weapons, horse trappings, and ritual objects of striking form and durability during the Iron Age.
