Description:

Southern Italy, Magna Graecia region, ca. 500 BCE. This is the reddish pottery bust of a woman with her hair worn long ove her shoulders and styled in waves. She wears disk earrings. Her face is similar to those of many Archaic period busts, suggesting that it is an artistic motif rather than a representation of a real woman. This is even more likely because female busts appear in Archaic art around 500 BCE; these are found in the sanctuaries of Demeter and Kore, and are thought to represent one of these two goddesses. Size: 1.5" L x 5" W x 7.5" H (3.8 cm x 12.7 cm x 19 cm)

Provenance: Ex: H. Berk collection, Chicago, IL

  • Condition: The piece has expected patina and wear; the bust has been broken in the back but the front, which is the carved part, has been left largely intact but for a chip on the lower part and a chip to the hair atop the head. There has been repair to one part of the bottom and one breast. The facial expression is clear and the styling of the hair is also very clear.
