Description:

**Originally Listed At $800**

Southeast Asia, Malaysia, ca. early 20th century CE. A vibrant and ornate decorative textile known as a tirai, composed of cotton cloth with plain weave, printed segments, orange felt panels, and white ric-rac trim. The central band features intricate couched metallic silver-metallic threads with contrasting red stitching - a stylistic element often seen in Chinese embroidery. Applied silvered copper disc spangles (sequins) are added throughout. Swastika motifs line the upper edge of the navy-blue ground, a traditional symbol in many Hindu-Buddhist cultures. This textile reflects cross-cultural influences from Hindu-Buddhist, Islamic, and broader Asian traditions. The lower edge is trimmed with decorative flaps, each tipped with dangling brass beads. This tirai likely hung above a door or a window, as the embroidery is on opposite sides of the main panel and the lower edge. Such textiles were hung in temples or domestic spaces during festivals or celebrations. Size: 76.25" L x 33" W (193.7 cm x 83.8 cm)
