Description:

Mali. Iron necklace, that would have been made by a Dogon blacksmith, composed of long hand-forged links supporting an assemblage of symbolic pendants. At the center hangs an egg-shaped yellow-brown stone enclosed within an iron framework, known as a binu duge, or "Nommo's ark," a potent emblem of spiritual authority. The necklace is further enriched with copper alloy cylindrical pendants, a large ring, and a double-coiled element, together forming a visually complex and ritually significant adornment associated with leadership, cosmology, and ancestral continuity. Custom mounted. Necklaces such as this were typically worn by the spiritual leader, called a Hogon, of the Dogon people. The stone wrapped in wrought iron are connected to fertility rites, and imbued with power. See Striking Iron Exhibit from Fowler Museum at UCLA, 2018 for another example. Size: 24"L. (61cm).
