Description:

Pre-Columbian, South America, Ecuador, Manabi, ca. 500 CE. One of the most elegant greyware sculptural representations of a seated shaman figure with what appears to be a hunchback, holding a ritualistic implement/instrument, and elaborately adorned with a large headband holding that magnificent striated coiffure in place, impressively large round ear ornaments, a grand collar or pectoral, double wristlets, and a nose ring. He presents a particularly tranquil, trancelike visage comprised of large, coffee bean shaped eyes, a straight protruding nose, open mouth, and jutting pointy chin. In his hands he holds a ritualistic implement, perhaps a musical instrument akin to a guiro given its shape. We just love the natural positioning of those legs with the right leg bent and foot pressing upon the left ankle, not to mention how the right hand is poignantly touching the chest as if this shaman is in the midst of singing or chanting. Size: 4.75" W x 7.75" H (12.1 cm x 19.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Park Avenue collector Shillo Adir, Acquired 1970s.
