Description:

Pre-Columbian, northern Chile, Mapuche peoples, ca. 1500 CE. An interesting smoking pipe, hand-carved from a single piece of dark-brown stone. The slender pipe resembles an abstract bird with a flared tail doubling as the handle, a central receptacle as the body, and a slender beak as the mouthpiece. An abstract anthropomorphic face tops the base of the mouthpiece and features recessed eyes, a broad nose, and a petite circular mouth. Forms like this example with a central receptacle chamber were common in ritual pipe smoking in ancient Chile. Pipes were symbolic gifts presented between different cultural groups throughout ancient Chile, and styles made in different regions have been found far from their origins. Size: 5.8" L x 1.4" W (14.7 cm x 3.6 cm); 1.3" H (3.3 cm) on included custom stand.
