Description:

Pre-Columbian, northern Chile, Mapuche peoples, ca. 1500 CE. An intriguing pipe, carved from mottled beige-hued stone, depicting an abstract anthropomorphic figure in a seated position. The figure holds its feet out in front of the slender body, with a hollow head doubling as the receptacle, and an entire second pipe - which the figure appears to be 'smoking' - as the lobed mouthpiece. The face bears a pair of incised chevron-shaped grooves which delineate the eyes, nose, and nasolabial folds. Size: 3.5" L x 0.9" W x 2.8" H (8.9 cm x 2.3 cm x 7.1 cm); 4.7" H (11.9 cm) on included custom stand.
