Description:

Pre-Columbian, Brazil, Marajoara culture, ca. 800 to 1400 CE. A fabulous pottery "shaman's seat" from a little-known culture. The seat has a round, flat surface, with a corseted lower body that widens out to be nearly the same width at its base as it is at the top. Swirling, incised lines are on the surface of the vessel, and two transformative, anthropomorphic/zoomorphic faces appear on opposite sides of corseted neck. These are surrounded by labyrinthine linear motifs. The seat's interior is smooth and undecorated. The Marajoara - also known as the Marajo - flourished on Marajo Island, in the mouth of the Amazon River. They built impressive mounds and lived subsistence lifestyles while producing stylistically-unique, beautiful pottery like this. Size: 7.5" W x 2.25" H (19 cm x 5.7 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex Eugene Lions, Geneve, Switzerland
