Description:

Oceania, Eastern Papua New Guinea, Trobriand Islands, Massim peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. An ovoid wooden shield known as a vayola, carved and decorated, most likely created for use in dance performances and ceremonial display. The surface is incised with geometric motifs, then painted in red and black against a white ground. Three bold circular designs dominate the front, evoking an abstracted visage or spirit presence. Two pierced holes at the center once supported a handle, now missing, with small eyelets later added on the reverse for convenient hanging. Likely created in the modern era for ritual dances or as a prestige object, this shield embodies the continuing aesthetic traditions of the Massim peoples while serving as an evocative visual centerpiece. Size: 29.5" L x 15.25" W (74.9 cm x 38.7 cm)

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985
