Lot 207
North America, Alaska or Northern Canada, Late Pleistocene Epoch, ca. 10,000 to 100,000 years ago. A dramatic and massive fossilized woolly mammoth tusk featuring a deep inward double curvature and rich surface coloration. Measured along the outer curve, the tusk is 6.75 feet long (2 meters)! The surface displays mottled hues of blue-gray, ochre, and green - created by millennia of mineralization in soil rich in vivianite, a phosphate mineral often found near gold ore deposits, suggesting the tusk likely originates from Alaska or northern Canada. The tusk is presented on a modern wooden base carved in the form of an African elephant, whose uplifted trunk and tail cradle the ancient ivory above. The base includes its own set of applied bone tusks, creating a symbolic juxtaposition of past and present pachyderms. A monumental and visually compelling display piece! Size: 44" L (111.8 cm); 47" H (119.4 cm) on included custom stand; tusk along the curve: 81" L x 5" W (205.7 cm x 12.7 cm)
