Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Late Cretaceous, ca. 80 to 70 million years ago. A remarkable fossilized skull of a mosasaur, a massive marine reptile that ruled the prehistoric seas during the final age of the dinosaurs. This impressive specimen showcases the creature's formidable dentition - sharp, conical teeth set within powerful hinged jaws - along with remnants of the pterygoid teeth positioned in the upper throat, an adaptation that allowed mosasaurs to grip and swallow large prey whole! The elongated skull and jaws exemplify the anatomical efficiency of these apex predators, whose streamlined bodies and flipper-like limbs made them fast and agile swimmers. Mosasaurs thrived in the warm shallow seas that once covered North Africa, preying on fish, ammonites, and other marine reptiles. A stunning and scientifically fascinating display piece! Size: 15" L x 4.5" W (38.1 cm x 11.4 cm); 14.25" H (36.2 cm) on included custom stand; larger teeth: 0.8" L (2 cm)

PROVENANCE: private Berthoud, Colorado, USA collection; ex-private European collection
