Pre-Columbian, South America, Colombia to Ecuador, Narino Highlands, Capuli / Narino culture, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. An impressive ceramic amphora of classic "bullet" form, rising from a narrow base to a broad, elongated body and flaring neck. The surface is highly burnished and decorated with striking black-on-red negative-resist motifs, including geometric and linear patterns that adorn both the neck and the rounded body. Vertical red-hued stripes divide the vessel into slender registers of design, while a continuous band encircles the neck, unifying the composition. Size: 12" W x 31" H (30.5 cm x 78.7 cm)

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple pieces with some stabilization visible around the base of neck . Expected age wear with nicks and abrasions to rim, neck, body, and base, with fading to original pigmentation and negative resist decoration. Nice earthen deposits and excellent manganese blooms throughout.
