Description:

Native American, Eastern Woodlands, Illinois, Jersey Bluff Peoples near Alton, ca. 1000 BCE. Massive! Woodlands era stone axe with three-quarter groove. Painstakingly pecked (pecking still evident) then polished. I know you are all thinking this is too large to be authentic. This example is not even the largest example known. Everything about the surface and how it was made is correct. There is a slight concave base from tip to butt. The surface shows extensive deposits and dendrites with no evidence of modern tool marks. An example of this size would have been ceremonial or votive in its usage. Size: 13.75" L x 5.125" H (34.9 cm x 13 cm)

Provenance: Ralph T. Coe Center for the Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, purchased from Robert Dunham, Cowgil, MO
