Description:

Europe / Asia, Middle Pleistocene to Middle Holocene, ca. 450,000 to 7,700 years ago. A large antler fragment from an Irish elk (Megaloceros giganteus), displayed upright. The section shows the broad palmation and branching base characteristic of this prehistoric megafauna, once among the largest deer species known. Its weathered surface retains natural striations with a patina ranging from deep brown to lighter gray tones. The Irish elk was one of the largest deer species to have ever lived, males are renowned for their enormous antlers, which could span up to 12 feet across and weigh over 80 pounds. Despite its name, the species was neither exclusively Irish nor a true elk, but a giant deer that became extinct around 7,700 years ago, overlapping with early humans. Archaeological evidence suggests people encountered them directly and may have hunted them or used their massive antlers and bones as tools or symbolic objects. Size: 27.5" L x 17" W (69.8 cm x 43.2 cm); 30.5" H (77.5 cm) on included custom stand.
