Southwestern United States, Central and Southern Arizona, Hohokam culture., ca. 950 - 1150 CE. A huge pottery vessel with a warm buff surface decorated in red-brown pigment. Two bands of simplified standing human figures encircle the body, framed by linear registers above and below. The figures appear linked hand to hand, possibly symbolizing unity, continuity, or communal ceremony. The impressive scale and uncommon figural decoration make this an exceptional example of Hohokam pottery, despite being reassembled from numerous fragments. Size: 18" W x 10.5" H (45.7 cm x 26.7 cm)
