Description:

Roberto and Angela Banuelos (Mexican, Mata Ortiz, 20th-21st century). Pottery bowl and Jar with fish. Signed "Roberto Banuelos" on underside of each base. A fine pair of pottery vessels of the Mata Ortiz tradition made by husband-and-wife artists Roberto Banuelos. The jar presents a spherical form with an inward curving rim, while the bowl features slopes walls that flare out to a broad rim and shallow basin. Both are carefully incised and painted with decorative fish shown in profile. When making pots like this one, Angela uses yellow, red, black, white, and mixed colors of clay, while Roberto paints the designs - in this case fish - on the walls and a band of Paquime geometric designs around the opening, as seen on the jar. Though both make the pottery, the vessels are only signed by the painter Roberto, following local tradition. Size of larger (bowl): 11.4" Diameter x 2.9" H (29 cm x 7.4 cm)

Roberto and Angela learned to make pottery in 1988, learning from two of Angela's sisters: Rosa Irene and Gloria Isela Lopez. Both women are in-laws of Reynaldo Quezada from whom they learned their pottery techniques.

Mata Ortiz pottery is a recreation of the Mogollon pottery found in and around the archeological site of Casas Grandes (Paquime) in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Named after the modern town of Mata Ortiz, which is near the archeological site, the style was propagated by Juan Quezada Celado. Quezada learned on his own to recreate this ancient pottery and then went on to update it.
