Description:

Maurice Braun (Kingdom of Hungary-born, American, 1877-1941). "Hills of California" chromolithograph on paper, ca. 1910. Hand-signed at lower right; titled on verso. A beautiful chromolithograph by American artist Maurice Braun titled "Hills of California," rendered in his signature Impressionist style and mounted in a lovely, wooden period frame. The scene presents the rolling hills of California beside a tranquil lake with majestic, purple mountains rising in the background, all beneath an idyllic, cloudy blue sky. The lush landscape is dotted with forest and spring green underbrush as well as trees whose foliage has just begun to turn the russet and gold hues of autumn. All is delineated with loose, Impressionist brushstrokes and a keen eye for the effects of light and color. A marvelous chromolithograph by Maurice Braun, an American Impressionist best known for his southern Californian landscapes. Size of chromolithograph: 29" W x 17.5" H (73.7 cm x 44.4 cm); of frame: 34.75" W x 22.75" H (88.3 cm x 57.8 cm)

About the artist: "Born in Hungary in 1877, Maurice Braun immigrated with his family to New York when he was four years old. He studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts from 1897-1900, and the following year with William Merritt Chase. After a six-month trip to Europe in 1902, Braun returned to New York where he began his artistic career as a figure and portrait painter. Seven years later, however, Braun had become more interested in landscape painting. This interest, as well as his commitment to Theosophy, a discipline that aimed to balance all religions with the natural and spiritual world, inspired the artist to move to San Diego. Southern California’s dramatic mountains, vast ocean and brilliant colors epitomized a kind of natural paradise for Braun and he captured the landscape and atmospheric light in an impressionistic style."
