Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A striking apple-green pectoral, finely worked from a lustrous and vibrant green jade prized in Mesoamerican culture. The gently arched form has a simple motif: an eye and perhaps a mouth viewed in profile. Along the edges are four tiny drilled perforations, carefully spaced for suspension, suggesting that this piece was once worn as a pendant or chest ornament in life or placed as a treasured offering in burial. Such jade pectorals were powerful symbols of status, fertility, and connection to the divine, and the vivid apple-green hue was especially esteemed by the ancient Maya for its association with maize, water, and life itself. Size: 2" L x 1.8" W (5.1 cm x 4.6 cm)
