Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A striking, large carved architecture feature - a base of a wall - featuring a high relief face mask depicting the sun god Kinich Ahau (designated as god G when referring to the codices) with circular eyes, puffy lips, gaunt cheeks, a headband, and spool-adorned ears. The carving is done from a pale cream-white limestone with small flecks of black and grey, and may have once been painted. Maya architecture is famous for its relief carvings, which adorned the interiors and exteriors of monumental buildings. Depictions of gods, like Kinich Ahau, signified the allegiances of the rulers who commissioned the buildings. Size: 13.75" L x 9" W x 10.55" H (34.9 cm x 22.9 cm x 26.8 cm)

Provenance: private collection, Southeastern USA to present; ex-Mint Museum, Charlotte, North Carolina, USA (69.20.4), 1969-2010; ex-Walter P. Scott MD, prior to 1969
