Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, Maya Lowlands, Guatemala Pacific Coast, Classic period, ca. 600 to 900 CE. Beautiful bulbous vessel with overall black /brown slip decorated with elaborate incised designs. Along rim are 8 depressions each about the size of a thumb interspersed with incised square in square designs with tight cross-hatching. Central panel is a pair of feathered serpents - Kukulkan. His face is in profile with long feathered tail and elaborate plume. With one Kukulkan, the tail slopes downward around the vessel. With the other the tail slopes upward. Decorations enhanced with natural iron based pigments. A fabulous example! Size: 7.25" W x 6.625" H (18.4 cm x 16.8 cm)

The Mayan name for Quetzalcoatl (Aztec) is Kukulkan. This name, derived from the Yucatec Maya dialect, translates to "feathered serpent". Kukulkan is a significant deity in Mayan mythology, often depicted on monumental architecture in cities like Chichen Itza.
