Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A molded pottery skull pendant with a perforation through the brow for suspension. The skull has a leering visage with the teeth slightly parted and shallow eye sockets. The two discs to the sides of the nose bridge represent nose plugs; traditional jewelry of Maya elite. The verso of this skull is flat, and this may have served as an important pendant or ornament since death was a major theme in Maya culture. A macabre but interesting piece! Size: 1.5" L x 1.25" W (3.8 cm x 3.2 cm); 3.31" H (8.4 cm) on included custom stand.
