Lot 300
**Originally Listed At $300**
Pre-Columbian, Central America, El Salvador, Maya, Copador type, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A delightful ceramic bowl animated by an intricate iconographic program featuring five seated scribes around the exterior and four stylized turkeys adorning the interior basin. The bowl is hand-built with subtly flaring walls, a carinated hip, and a rounded and fluted lower area leading to a planar base, all coated in a glossy red-orange slip over a buff ground. Each scribe is shown seated with bent knees and voluminous headgear, their hands poised in gestures that suggest writing, counting, or reading aloud - evoking the high status of scribes in Classic Maya society as keepers of both lineage and lore. Inside the basin, four wide-bodied turkeys are symmetrically painted between curving scrollwork, their wattled necks and fanned tails captured with fluid red lines and calligraphic flair. The turkey, associated with both sustenance and sacrificial rites, may reference themes of feasting, abundance, or ritual tribute. Size: 7.5" Diameter x 3" H (19 cm x 7.6 cm)
Bowls of this type were likely used in elite dining contexts or placed as offerings in burials, their painted subjects underscoring the wealth, literacy, and ceremonial obligations of their owners.
