Lot 6
Pre-Columbian, Central America, El Salvador, Maya, Copador type, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A splendid Maya Copador-type pottery bowl, skillfully hand-built with a planar base, rounded body, sharply carinated shoulder, and a slightly flared rim. The vessel is decorated in the characteristic Copador palette of rich red hematite and warm orange pigments over a beige slip. While the interior remains largely unadorned aside from a single red band circling the inner rim, the exterior is richly painted with a horizontal register of stylized pseudoglyphs bordered by twin red bands, followed by a vertical motif of alternating stripes that cascade toward the base. Size: 5.4" L x 5" W x 3.5" H (13.7 cm x 12.7 cm x 8.9 cm)
The term "Copador" refers to a specific ceramic tradition shared between the Maya and neighboring cultures in El Salvador and Honduras, particularly notable for its integration of Maya-style glyphic decoration with local design conventions. Though these glyph-like motifs do not typically represent readable text, they evoke the visual authority of hieroglyphic writing and suggest the elite or ceremonial use of such vessels. The elegant balance of geometric patterning and symbolic ornament on this bowl reflects the cultural fusion and aesthetic refinement of the Late Classic Maya sphere in southeastern Mesoamerica.
