Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, El Salvador, Maya civilization, Copador type, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A striking hand-built and expertly burnished pottery bowl created in the distinctive Copador style - a regional ceramic tradition that blends Maya and neighboring influences, often associated with elite contexts. This elegant vessel sits on a rounded, stable base with a subtly ribbed bottom and sharply carinated sides that flare outward to a gently everted rim. Adorned in vibrant red, black, and beige pigments, the bowl is intricately decorated both inside and out. Within the basin, six stylized turkeys - animals symbolically linked to fertility, feasting, and divine offering in Maya iconography - march in procession around a central tondo of concentric circles. The exterior features three elaborately dressed seated figures, likely scribes, astronomers, or priestly elites, each reaching toward a series of six glyphs. These glyphs may represent speech, thought, or cosmic knowledge - underscoring the intellectual prestige of the figures. Size: 8.3" W x 3.5" H (21.1 cm x 8.9 cm)
