Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerica, Maya culture, Copador type, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A finely painted Maya Copador pottery bowl decorated with lively animal imagery across both the interior and exterior surfaces. The hemispherical vessel features a warm orange slip and a gently flaring rim bordered by painted black bands. Three stylized lizards encircle the exterior of the bowl, rendered in fluid black lines that emphasize their elongated bodies and curling tails. Inside the vessel, three birds appear spaced around the interior wall, painted in a similar graphic style that reflects the rhythmic balance characteristic of Maya ceramic design. Copador vessels were widely produced in the southeastern Maya region during the Classic period and are recognized for their orange surfaces, painted animal motifs, and bold linear compositions. Bowls of this type were likely used in food or drink consumption and may have served in both domestic and ceremonial contexts. Size: 8.3" Diameter x 3.5" H (21.1 cm x 8.9 cm)

The lively animal imagery and balanced composition exemplify the sophisticated painted traditions of Classic Maya pottery.
