Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerica, Maya, Honduras, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A compelling Maya greenstone amulet carved in the form of an avian head, its curved beak projecting forward with quiet authority. The sculptor reduced the bird to essential forms - rounded eye, hooked beak, and sharply incised lines suggesting plumage - achieving a balance between abstraction and recognizable life. The greenstone displays subtle tonal variation and a soft polish, emphasizing the organic contours of the carving. Bird imagery held deep symbolic meaning in the Maya world, associated with the sky realm, divine messengers, and elite identity. Amulets of this type were worn as personal adornments and talismans, likely suspended from cords through the drilled perforation visible near the eye. This finely worked piece reflects the Maya mastery of hard stone and their enduring fascination with avian forms as symbols of power, vision, and connection between earthly and celestial domains. Size: 2" L x 1.3" W x 1.4" H (5.1 cm x 3.3 cm x 3.6 cm)

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000; ex-Joe Handler collection
