Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Jaina / Campeche, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A mold-made pottery zoomorphic whistle in the form of a standing coyote or canid, with anthropomorphized body - pectoral and loin cloth. A notch in the tail and vent on the verso turn this figure into a playable whistle that produces a low tone. The Maya, like most pre-industrial societies, had a close relationship with animals and the natural landscape. Many of their cultural metaphors, adages, and omens were based on the behavior of animals, and some animals were known for their supernatural power. Like the Aztec and other Mesoamerican groups, the Maya saw coyotes as both fierce hunters and trickster figures. Shamanic leaders were believed to have the ability to transform into the fiercest beasts, including the coyote. Size: 2" L x 2.5" W x 5.75" H (5.1 cm x 6.4 cm x 14.6 cm)
