Description:

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast of Mexico, Western Yucatan Peninsula, Campeche Region, possibly Jaina Island, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A hollow ceramic figure that once functioned as a rattle, depicted frontally and adorned with an elaborate headdress composed of coiled or tiered elements, along with ear ornaments and a necklace. The lower garment is incised with a geometric band. The elongated face features raised dots along the cheeks, representing ritual scarification. The hollow body likely once contained small clay pellets or pebbles, designed to create sound when shaken during religious ceremonies. Size: 4" W x 8.5" H (10.2 cm x 21.6 cm)
