Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Yucatan Peninsula, probably Jaina Island, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A charming, mold-formed pottery whistle depicting a resting elderly figure with a hand held up to their mouth, cheeks puffed out and brow furrowed. This may be showing that the individual is engaged in manipulating sound from their mouth, or that they are in the act of making a symbolic gesture of undetermined meaning. There are good remains of the original iconic Maya blue across the clothing. A small mouthpiece doubles as figure's posterior and still produces a nice, low-tone sound when played! Size: 2.25" L x 1.75" W x 3.5" H (5.7 cm x 4.4 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
