Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Jaina Island, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A mold-formed rattle depicting a standing individual of status or wealth - perhaps a lord or chieftain. Red, blue, and white pigments form the striped decorations of his robe as he wears a plethora of finery while holding a striated object from a rope or cord in one hand. Several perforations enabled the instrument to emanate sound at one time when jostled. Size: 3.75" W x 7.9" H (9.5 cm x 20.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
