Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Maya Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A gorgeous pottery vessel in shades of deep red and warm russet with a column-like body and circular rim and base. Recessed vertical stripes decorate the body of the ancient vessel, while a horizontal band of relief images inhabits the area just below its flared rim. Highlighted with red cinnabar, the anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures on this register represent Maya glyphs. The glyph motifs, a form of Maya script, are comprised of symbols that represent sounds and/or concepts conveying an ancient Mayan message. An impressive example rich with Maya history! Size: 7.125" in diameter x 9.625" H (18.1 cm x 24.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Roy Oswald collection, Arizona, USA 1960 to 2004
