Description:

Pre-Columbian, Guatemala, Peten Basin, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A thick-walled pottery bowl, covered in pale-orange slip, with a stable, flattened base and a black-painted lip. The interior boasts a register of abstract repeated glyphoids above a reserved floor. The exterior is adorned with multiple large glyphs in Primary Standard Sequence (PSS) most likely indicating the ownership of the vessel. The bowl’s form—with its wide mouth, flared walls, and flat base—is characteristic of ceremonial drinking vessels from the Petén Lowlands of northern Guatemala, an area that includes prominent Classic-period city-states such as Tikal, Naranjo, and Uaxactún. Size: 9.25" W x 3.5" H (23.5 cm x 8.9 cm)

The painted inscription imitates or contains elements of the Primary Standard Sequence (PSS), a standardized formula used on elite ceramics to identify the vessel’s contents, function, owner, and sometimes its maker. These glyphs frequently begin with phrases such as u tz’ib’ (“the writing of…”) or u k’ahk’ kakaw (“the sacred cacao of…”), referencing their use as cacao drinking vessels in ritual and courtly settings.

While some glyphic elements on this bowl appear abstracted or stylized, the overall composition clearly follows the visual conventions of Classic Maya glyphic bands, denoting prestige and literacy. Such vessels were often part of burial offerings, or exchanged among elites in diplomatic and ceremonial contexts.
