Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. An exquisite mold-made pottery jaguar head applique or pendant in featuring a detailed visage, the naturalistic lips curled back in a snarl under a more stylized set of spiraling whiskers and lined eyes. The forehead is drilled for suspension or attachment, the verso concave like a maskette. The jaguar is arguably the most powerful animal in the Maya religion - associated with strength, agility, hunting prowess, and mystical nocturnal qualities. Leaders sat on thrones draped in jaguar skins and imitated this cat's appearance and took on related names, even using jaguar head headdresses or helmets to convey their affiliation with these animals. The jaguar is also associated with the terrestrial and nocturnal the dappled coat symbolizing the stars in the sky. Size: 3" L x 2.25" W (7.6 cm x 5.7 cm)
