Description:

Pre-Columbian, Maya, El Salvador, Honduras ca. 550 to 850 CE. Very unusual Maya cylinder certainly used for consumption of cocoa. The iconography on this vessel show a somewhat mixed style of Copador from El Salvador and Ulua Valley from Honduras. Deep orange background decorated in three bands. Top band consists of floral elements looking almost like puzzle pieces. The central band, in deeper red/orange and black consists of stylized glyphoids in anthropomorphic and zoomorphic forms. The final band is done in a black field, in a series of larger glyphoids. Because the Mayan regions in El Salvador and Honduras were physically distant from the cultural capital(s) in Guatemala, many of the glyphs were created in the style of readable glyphs but did not always carry any meaning at all. It is likely some of these glyphs were seen on Peten vessels and copied. Some of the glyphs are in fact translatable but not the entire vessel. Size: 4.5" W x 5.75" H (11.4 cm x 14.6 cm)

Provenance: Collection of Y. Kayvan, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from a Los Angeles, California, USA. Gallery acquisition dates range from the late 1990s to 2005
