Description:

Pre-Columbian, Guatemala, Maya Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A tall, figural ceramic vessel in the form of a seated person with a distended belly button and large loincloth. The face is striking, with deepset eyes, a slightly open mouth, and pierced ears that may once have had decorative metal rings or feathers adorning them. The figure's sculpted crossed legs and thin arms are wonderfully three dimensional and rendered against the large vessel body. The headdress is also particularly interesting - half of the feathered fringe stands up straight, while the other half is flipped down as if to shield the left eye. Size: 5.3" W x 6" H (13.5 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966
