Description:

El Salvador/Honduras region, ca. 500 - 800 CE. Chocolate ware pottery double chambered cylinder vase, having an overall carved decoration on both cylinders. Depicted is a seated deity with a zoomorphic head and human body, wearing a very elaborate feathered and decorated headdress, and long bead necklace with a central pendant. The scene is repeated on both cylinders, and each has two vertical columns of glyphic decoration. There is an opening in the interior base wall, which would allow liquid to flow between the two cylinders. A very rare double cylinder example. Size: 7”H x 7.5”W (17.8 x 19.1cm).

Provenance: Ex. private CA. collection by descent, acquired from Stanley Boggs, 1950’s. Ex. Stanley Boggs, acquired from Armando A. Lara, U.S. serviceman, 1944 - 1950’s.

  • Condition: Remaining traces of light blue pigment on the ground and pink stucco on the rims and underside of the base. A very minor tight interior hair line from the rim, otherwise intact, excellent condition.
