Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya/Toltec culture, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. A hand-built brownware pottery jar of an intriguing form covered in lustrous plumbate glaze. The notably aged face on the front depicts Huehueteotl-Xiuhtecuhtli, the Mayan old god of fire (derived from "huehue," meaning "old old," and "teotl," meaning god). The aged countenance presents with bushy brows, a sharply crested nose, full lips in a downturned grimace above a pinched chin, and gaunt eyes beneath bushy brows. The tall ears are each decorated with pierced ear spools, and above a segmented headband is a broad, cylindrical rim. Plumbate ware was perhaps made by a small number of artisans around the Mexico/Guatemala border who then exported them throughout wider Mesoamerica. Size: 5.75" L x 5.3" W x 5.625" H (14.6 cm x 13.5 cm x 14.3 cm)
