Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerica, Honduras, Maya culture, Ulua Valley type, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A finely painted Maya Copador pottery bowl decorated with three rectangular panels of stylized pseudoglyphs encircling the exterior. The shallow hemispherical vessel features a warm orange slip and a gently flaring rim accented with painted red and black bands. Each panel contains a bold glyph-like motif rendered in fluid lines, framed by vertical red borders and alternating with darker painted fields. While not forming true readable inscriptions, such pseudoglyphs imitate the appearance of Maya hieroglyphic writing, reflecting the prestige and visual authority associated with elite texts in Classic Maya culture. Copador ceramics were widely produced in the southeastern Maya region during the Classic period and are recognized for their orange surfaces, geometric framing devices, and painted motifs in black and red. Bowls of this type were used for serving food or drink and may have appeared in both domestic and ceremonial settings. Size: 6.9" Diameter x 2.4" H (17.5 cm x 6.1 cm)

The balanced composition and rhythmic panel arrangement exemplify the refined painted traditions of Classic Maya pottery.
